BIG 6 IN NUMBER

At Lindisfarne Primary School our commitment to every learner is to provide quality teaching and learning that will enable students to demonstrate a year of growth for a year of learning in number.  The Big 6 in number are six essential ideas which provide students with key understandings that will support them in the future. They work in a sequential order starting at Trusting the Count, Place Value, Multiplicative Thinking, Partitioning, Proportional Reasoning & then Generalising.

Our staff provide many opportunities for students to be emersed in learning about number.  One of these includes rotations!  Maths rotations provides all students with the learning experience that allow them to engage in number activities independently, increasing their fluency and allowing them to explore ideas together in a small group.  It also enables each student to be a part of a teacher focus group each week.  Having a teacher focus group allows the teacher to provide targeted learning that is differentiated to the needs of the students within the group.  Here are some photos of the amazing rotation work our Kinder to Grade 2 students have been involved in this term!  Next term our Grade 3 to 6 rotations will feature in the newsletter.

Kinder

In Kinder playing games plays a crucial part in Maths Rotations.  These games were focusing on counting and numeral recognition.

Prep

In Prep our students focus on subitising (recognising how many without having to count all) and using ten frames to represent amounts.  Creating visual images of numbers (knowing that 6 is 4 & 2, 3 & 3, 5 & 1 etc) is crucial to developing good number sense.

Grade 1/2

In Grades 1 & 2 students work independently on devices to practise building fluency. They also practise building fluency through games and other activities that focus on Trusting the Count and Place Value.
