MEET OUR SCHOOL NURSE

nurse.JPG

Hello everyone, my name is Penny, and I am the new School Health Nurse for Lindisfarne Primary School. I will be at your School every Wednesday and look forward to meeting you all. This is the first time Lindisfarne Primary has had a School Health Nurse, and I am new to School Nursing, hence my priorities for this term will be meeting as many staff and students as possible and learning and understanding how your School operates. I look forward to this exciting opportunity.

I have been nursing for over 25 years and have a Child and Family Health background.  My last position was working at the Royal Hobart Hospital in the peri-operative unit, looking after children and adults. In my spare time I enjoy gardening and bush walking and we have three cheeky but adorable dogs. Most of our family are on the mainland in QLD and NSW, my husband and I love this beautiful state called Tassie and have lived here for many years.

School Health Nurses work quite differently to what is often expected, we aren’t taking over the first aid responsibilities. We work under a primary health care framework providing health education and health promotion to students and the school community. Along with health assessments for all kindergarten students including vision and hearing screening, other primary students will also be screened if there are specific concerns by teachers or parents. Please note a consent form must be signed by a parent/guardian prior to all health assessments.

Along with health assessments for kindergarten students, I will also be engaging students from all grades in lessons and group activities surrounding health and wellbeing. Some of these lessons and activities will include education on nutrition, personal hygiene, handwashing, dental care, sun safety, growth and development, positive mental health and mindfulness.

My first official day at Lindisfarne Primary will be Wednesday 27th Oct. If you would like to speak to me, I can be contacted through the school office. I look forward to meeting you all and becoming part of the school community.

Kind Regards,

Nurse Penny
