SPOTLIGHT ON LEARNING - GRADE 6

Grade 6 Camp!

The morning of the Grade 6 camp was filled with an exited tension, as the eager Grade 6s were awaiting to arrive at camp.

The 3 days were packed with interesting twists and turns with many new and unique challenges we had never tried before. There were 3 main challenges that everyone had to face, even those who were nervous. The first of the 3 challenges were ziplining. It was a long and high zipline course stretching across the large lake landscape! The height scared some but others took it in their stride. Luckily, we were strapped in by 2 harnesses and a helmet so… we were safe.

The next challenge was absailing, which some of us had never even heard of before! If you didn’t know, absailing is when you are strapped to a harness and a rope (luckily) which is bolted to the top of a cliff, then you proceed to walk down the cliff face on an almost vertical angle.

The third and last challenge was the initiative tasks. The initiative tasks consisted of many obstacles and challenges you can only complete with a team. This needed everyone to co-operate and work together. Many bonds grew over these harsh team challenges. The challenge that was the trickiest and required the most teamwork was ‘The Tyre and Pole Challenge’, more specifically we had to attempt to remove the large and heavy tyre off a large 5 metre pole. This means we had to either create a human pyramid or for some of the shorter and lighter peers to climb on the taller peers’ shoulders to reach and lift the tire off the pole some teams successfully completed this gruelling challenge.

Each day we met up to feast on 6 meals: breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and desserts. You’re probably thinking this is a lot of food. Well yes, it is … for most people! Some people still said they were hungry after being fed as much as they wanted (Lachlan!). Each night before bed we played an intense game of Spotlight. We played this game as late at 9:30pm when it was almost pitch black. We also played another less well-known and more unique games (this is a nice way to put it) these games are called Banana Tunnel Ball, Wallaby Spotlight and News Paper Fashion Parade’! Banana Tunnel Ball is like normal tunnel ball, except you lie on your back and place the banana into the feet of the person behind you. Most teams struggled and broke the banana, turning it into a banana split. The next game is Wallaby Spotlight. This worked like a game of Mr Wizard except you bounce like a wallaby and when the spotlight shone on you must stop and freeze as if you were a wallaby in a car's spotlight. The sole aim was to amuse the teachers, although they said it was to get to the end.

The last and final game, maybe the most unique was News Paper Fashion Parade. Each team of 3 students get 5 minutes to design, create and fit their newspaper outfit suitable for camp onto their model. The teammate wearing the outfit the walked the catwalk, while the other members advertised and sold their unique outfit to the judges (teachers).

In conclusion, we had a once in a lifetime experience at the 2021 Grade 6 camp. We made bonds and friendships with new peers and learnt to face our fears. We tried many new things and learnt lifelong skills (like cooking, cleaning and using cutlery). This is a great end of primary school memory!
