Hello and welcome to Winter! I’m not sure why, but it always surprises me when the days start getting longer and the mornings are so fresh. I absolutely love our seasons but by golly it’s been cold this week! It’s so lovely to be back at school this week. I have been keeping in touch via Mr Hickey over the past four weeks and I have loved seeing everyone thrive this term but seeing and hearing it straight from the students is very special.
Encouragingly, the number of COVID-19 cases in our community are declining. This means that we can now start gradually reintroducing activities, such as whole school assemblies indoors! This will begin in Term 3 and we are so excited to welcome back all our parents and carers. All adults will need to wear face masks and we are so pleased to be able to begin sharing all our learning with you in this way again.
Launching into Learning (LiL) caps have also been removed, and we’re excited to welcome back more families to our LiL sessions in the GP Hall, beginning in week 6 (10th June 2022). Please remember that sometimes circumstances may change quickly. We will let families know of any changes via Facebook, Seesaw and Schoolzine, and we appreciate your flexibility if activities are cancelled or modified at short notice.
Another important reminder, especially as we move into the cold and flu season, is to please continue to keep children at home if they are unwell. I encourage all adults and children to obtain a flu shot to help us keep all our vulnerable community members safe.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Sarah Peart, who recently stood down as School Association Chair. Sarah has been (and still is!) a wonderful supporter of our school and has been a diligent and passionate Chair over the past few years. She has been a very big supporter of all the recent work in the Kitchen Garden. Sarah is always willing to volunteer at fundraisers and events, she has campaigned passionately for many of our indigenous projects and has been a fantastic conduit between the school community and the school staff. Thank you for your contributions, Sarah, we value and appreciate your time.
I would also like to thank Mrs Kate Rainbird who has retired as our School Association Secretary. Kate has been integral to our marketing and fundraising, is always willing to volunteer her time and skills and we will miss her organisation and IT skills!
I would like to congratulate Allison Walker, who has been elected as our new School Association Chairperson. Allison is a wonderful addition to our School Association and has a son in Prep. She is very keen to encourage other new parents to attend the next School Association Meeting, to be held in 3/4 Black classroom (Mrs Moore and Miss Street) on Tuesday the 7th June at 7pm. We still require a Secretary and a Vice Chair, so if this is something you have been thinking about, please don’t hesitate to contact me or Allison to discuss how much fun it is!
As you will be aware the reporting process has changed significantly this year. Mid-Year reports will be sent home on Friday the 24th June. The key changes that you will notice this cycle are that there will be no written comments about your child’s progress in the mid-year report. The Department of Education is introducing a new 9-point visual scale for Prep to Year 10 students. This goes with a generic worded description to help you understand how your child is going against the expected standard for their year level. The new 9-point scale will show more specifically where your child is at with their learning and judgements are based on a wide range of evidence that the teacher collects across the year. At Mid-Year, your child’s report will also provide a tick in a box for effort and behaviour for English, Maths and Science, as well as for specialist subjects.
Please note: For PREP students, Judgements against the 9-point scale are only made at the end of the year and only the worded descriptor will show.
If your child is in Years 1 –6 you will see both the 9-point scale and the worded descriptor. English, Maths, Science will be reported on in this way at Mid-Year with the addition of HASS at the end of year report in Term 4. Specialist subjects will show effort and behaviour, as well as a description of content covered. If your child is on a Learning Plan, the 9-point scale will be applied to their progress against the student’s learning goals.
For Mid-Year, the written comment will be replaced with an opportunity to chat face-to-face with your child’s teacher in a 3-way learning conference. Online bookings for Parent/Teacher/Student Learning Conferences will be open between Monday 20th June and Friday the 24th June. Booking information will be sent home prior and will allow parents to book a 15-minute timeslot with your child’s teacher to discuss their wellbeing and learning progress. Your child’s teacher will have samples of their learning to share with you. If your child has more than one classroom teacher, you only need to book a meeting with ONE of their teachers. These conferences will take place in your child’s classroom between the 27th June and the 1st July.
Kind regards,
As the mornings become increasingly chilly, Reader's Club is being inundated with enthusiastic readers. We would love the help of additional volunteers in providing the opportunity for all students to read aloud. If you can spare some time, come and join us in the library between 8.30-9.00 on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It is a great way to start the day! All volunteers are required to have a Working with Vulnerable People Card and be Fully Vaccinated.
WINTER SPORTS FOOTBALL/NETBALL
Football
First quarter was dominated by Bellerive with our team struggling to get the ball forward of centre. Being a little shell shocked and feeling a little like David as there team were Goliath size, our kids were feeling a little dejected. A pep talk and a few changes on field had our team firing up and making it hard for Bellerive to score and we managed to get the ball into our forward line.
Lots of guts and determination combined for great quarter. The students came into the half time huddle smiling and pumped up ready for the next quarter. A few more tweaks to positions and we headed out for the third quarter - And what a quarter it was! Our back line was a force field and our mid field and wings carried the ball to our forwards with pace and fluidity. Our forward line struggled a little with the height difference but it was one of our smallest players who found the ball at ground level and in ‘Tony Liberatore’ style found us with our first goal from the forward pocket.
Bellerive managed a couple of goals but were made to work hard for it. Unfortunately this would be our only goal but it was well worth all the hard work up until then. The change in our kids from the first quarter break to the third quarter break was chalk and cheese. Our kids were up and about and it was amazing to see their smiles. The last quarter was another improvement and once again our back line, centres and wing all combined to make it hard once again for Bellerive to convert. Unfortunately we just struggled with height again in the forward line but they dug deep and tried right up until the end of the game.
Overall, I am so proud of the way this group of kids played and the way they represented our school. Special mentions from our first game go to Bailey and Xander who shared encouraging words and support with our students who are new to playing football, it was a great example of sportsmanship and the spirit of our team.
Brett Gordon and Shae Hickey
Netball
Our two netball sides who have been evenly distributed with a mix of players who have experience and who are new to the game, played their first game against Bellerive. After only playing together in some training practice games since the beginning of term 2, both teams really stepped up to shown determination, enthusiasm and a never-ending attitude of “we can do this”.
Height seemed to be an advantage that Bellerive had in both their netball and football teams, but this didn’t deter our netballers from getting creative and using pass styles to their advantage. The intercept was the real winner for our teams as they intercepted passes and were usually the first one to pick up any loose balls and convert for our teams. It was great to see encouragement from all players for one another and any goals that didn’t go in or passes that didn’t go our way, were met with “That’s okay, try again”.
As coaches, one of the most exciting things to watch as the season continues is how players develop individually but more importantly, how they develop as a team. We are looking forward to watching this development as the season continues.

THE PREMIER'S READING CHALLENGE
The Premier's Reading Challenge has officially started!
This year, the challenge begins on Monday 2nd May and ends on Friday 8th July. Students record the books they have read using the log books, which were distributed last Wednesday. A returns box for completed log books will be located in the library, along with spare log books if extras are needed.
About the Challenge:
The Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC) challenges students from Prep to Year 6 to make reading a fun part of their day and read 10 books in 10 weeks. This can be integrated with existing classroom reading programs. Students can negotiate with their teacher to have a large chapter book counted as being more than one book. Whilst reading 10 books means the student has completed the Challenge, they can read more. All Prep-Grade 6 students have been registered to participate.
All Students participating in the Challenge:
- Receive a PRC bookmark
- Go in the weekly draw to win a school visit from Hawka.
- There are 10 to be won, 1 for each week of the challenge.
All students completing the Challenge:
- Receive a certificate from the Premier.
- Go in the draw to win a $100 book voucher.
- There are 3 to be won; 1 prize for each region.
Happy reading eveyone!
A friendly reminder to keep your child home if they are unwell or showing any COVID symptoms.
Rapid antigen tests are avaliable from the office.
We have two main channels of communication here at LPS, Schoolzine and Seesaw. Schoolzine is where we issue things like this newsletter, important information relating to COVID and other essential communications that need your actions or attention.
Seesaw is an important communication tool that all of our teachers use to interact and share learning with families. We encourage parents to interact with staff through this portal and talk with you children about what we have shared. This is monitored during school hours. Please ensure you obtain the QR code from your children’s teacher and sign up to receive regular updates on their learning and photos of them engaging in lots of different activities.
If you have any urgent information that you need to give your children, the teacher or the office please call 6243 9262 as email communication can not be guaranteed with a prompt response.
