What a great start to the year we continue to have! The learning programs are off and racing and it has been great to see so many students forming new relationships with their peers in the classroom and playground.
On the 2nd of March, Lindisfarne Primary supported World Kindness Day by dressing in rainbow colours and exploring the concept of kindness. Thank you to students and families that supported this wonderful event.
Earlier this term we ran elections for the 2022 SRC and elected representatives from each class in Years 3-6. The SRC has been busy already, supporting Harmony Day preparations and running Harmony Day related competitions across the school. Harmony Day was an opportunity for us to explore Australia’s cultural diversity, inclusiveness, cultural respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
Unfortunately, we were not able to have parent spectators at our Year 3-6 Athletics carnival, however, the day was a great success. Our high participation rates and sportsmanship were once again on display, and it was excellent to see so many students giving their best. Thank you to those that helped with the running of the day, and to Mr Kamano who took the time to analyse the times from each race to ensure that selection of our SPSSA Athletics Team was fair and accurate. The SPSSA Athletics Carnival was run in wet conditions and gave all of our representatives a chance to show their resilience and skills. Congratulations to all students who represented us on this day!
As parents would be aware, there have been changes to the way that all DOE Schools report and communicate with families in 2022 and moving forward. Teachers have now completed conversations with parents around how students are settling in, their application to learning and their wellbeing. We look forward to communicating regularly throughout the year about your child’s progress.
As an ongoing support for the prevention of the spread of Covid-19, we would like to remind parents that it is important that students stay home if they are unwell and test. RAT Tests are still available through the school office but must be collected by a parent.
Kind Regards,
Shae Hickey
This year, you will notice some changes to reporting in Tasmanian Government Schools.
Firstly, you won’t see A-E reporting any more for Prep to Year 10 students.
Most families in Tasmanian Government Schools have told us that A-E reporting isn’t meaningful enough for them. So, the Department is introducing a new 9-point visual scale.
Along with the visual scale a worded description will be included to help you understand how your child is going against the expected standard for their year level. The 9-point scale will show more specifically where your child is at with their learning. This change won’t apply to students in Years 11 and 12.
The second main change you’ll see is that teachers will be communicating with you more regularly throughout the year, instead of providing written comments on reports.
This more regular communication might be through online communication, telephone calls, or face-to-face conversations.
By having more regular information about your child’s learning progress you’ll get a better understanding of how your child is going across the entire school year (not just twice a year).
What you should expect across the school year:
Term 1 |
Week 5-8 |
Communication focussing on application to learning Or conversation about learning plan goals with families and students |
Term 2 |
Week 6-9 |
Opportunity for a two or three-way conversation focussing on learning progress, application to learning and wellbeing and/or learning plan goals. |
Term 2 |
Week 10 |
Mid-year report of learning achievement |
Term 3 |
Weeks 6-9 |
Opportunity for a two or three-way conversation focussing on learning progress, application to learning and wellbeing and/or learning plan goals. |
Term 4 |
Week 9-10 |
End of year report of learning achievement |
Families will be supported to understand the new reporting requirements and the changes to mid and end of year report as they are implemented.
Watch the video introducing the changes: Changes to reporting in 2022

New changes to hay fever advice
Public Health has reviewed their advice about hay fever in the current COVID-19 environment.
Hay fever symptoms are similar to COVID-19 symptoms, so it’s important families know what they need to do if their child experiences hay fever symptoms.
If your child has hay fever symptoms, please keep them at home and test for COVID-19 using a rapid antigen test (RAT).
If your child tests negative on a RAT and symptoms continue, Public Health advises that you must do a second RAT 24 hours later, or seek a PCR test.
If the second RAT or PCR remains negative, this is sufficient evidence for your child to return to school if they feel well.
If symptoms change or increase in severity, please see your treating medical practitioner for review.
Please know that Public Health advice can change at short notice, and we appreciate your patience as we respond to these changes as quickly as possible.
If you have any questions, please contact the school office. For more information, please visit the Tasmanian Government Coronavirus website or contact the Tasmanian Public Health Hotline on 1800 671 738, or Department of Education COVID Support Hotline at COVID19support@education.tas.gov.au or on 1800 816 057.
Why is number so important?
In 2022, one of our focusses here at Lindisfarne Primary School will continue to be on number. Numbers are a crucial element in Mathematics as most other mathematical areas require a good understanding of number to develop a good understanding of them.
In primary school, students generally work within four of the Six Big Ideas in Number (see diagram below). In this article I’d like to share some ideas on how you can explore two of these Big Ideas at home, Trusting the Count and Place Value!
Trusting the Count
Activity for counting real world objects
How many buttons are on the remote? Can you point to them as you count them?
Activity for subitising (knowing how many without counting)
How many windows can you see? I can see 6 windows at the top (they look like 6 on a dice) and 1 on the bottom on the window on that house!
Activity for building mental objects (having a picture in your head of what a number looks like e.g. I know that 5 is 3 and 2)
I have put 4 forks on the table. I need to put 3 more on the table. How many will there be altogether once they are there?
Place Value
Activity for looking at digits
Using a set of playing cards to make a number and talk about the value of each digit. Ask the student to try and make the largest number or smallest number possible.
Activity for counting in 10s
Gather some money and ask how many altogether. Use the strategy of counting in tens to find out. To make this more challenging give them an amount and ask how much they would have if they added more tens (e.g. you have $4.25 how much would you have it you added 60c? Count in tens from $4.25 to find out)
Activity using number lines
Use a measuring tape from home to locate numbers on it. Talk about the location of numbers compared to other numbers. See if they can create their own number lines using blank paper.

Kinder enrolments for our 2023 classes are now open for children born in 2018. Children must either be living within the LPS Intake Area or be a younger sibling of an already enrolled student at LPS.
If you have a child ready for Kinder next year, please phone the school office on 6243 9232 to get the enrolment process started.
Last Thursday our grade 3-6 students participated in the LPS Athletics Carnival, it was wonderful to see every student show such great sportsmanship and reslience on a very hot day.
We have two main channels of communication here at LPS, Schoolzine and See Saw. Schoolzine is where we issue things like this newsletter, important information relating to COVID and other essential communications that need your actions or attention.
Seesaw is an important communication tool that all of our teachers use to interact and share learning with families. We encourage parents to interact with staff through this portal and talk with you children about what we have shared. This is monitored during school hours. Please ensure you obtain the QR code from your children’s teacher and sign up to receive regular updates on their learning and photos of them engaging in lots of different activities.
If you have any urgent information that you need to give your children, the teacher or the office please call 62439262.
LUNCH ORDER SERVICE - BAMBINI BITES
QKR! ONLINE CANTEEN ORDERING
Bambini Bites works in association with CBA Bank/Mastercard and uses their online school canteen ordering system for the convenience of schools, parents and students called QKR! which can be downloaded to all Apple phones/IPAD’s and Android devices.
QKR! allows parents/staff to log into the app and place lunch order two (2) weeks in advance any time until 9.00pm the night prior the lunch is required.
Unfortunately, if you miss this cut off time, we are unable to assist with late orders. We recommend that you place your order as early as possible QKR! sometimes struggles near cut off times due to the high usage of all users Australia wide. This cut off time has been put into place to allow our kitchen staff sufficient time to prepare food for all lunch orders.
WHAT TO DO IF MY CHILD IS SICK AND NOT ATTENDING SCHOOL AND I HAVE PLACED AN ORDER VIA QKR!
We understand that little people can become unwell at the drop of a hat, to assist parents and families with this we request an email to advise.
We need to receive notification no later than 9.00am the morning of the fulfilment of the lunch order, this will enable us to hold the order over for the next school lunch day.
Please note that due to the time of day we are unable to reply instantly and there could be a delay, we will do our absolute best to have contacted you within 24 hours.
Phone calls are not accepted as we need the details to hold onto the order and as you can appreciate are usually super busy preparing food to fulfill hundreds of orders for hungry tummies!
Please email bambinibites@gmail.com
please add to the email
· Childs name and order date
· Child/children’s class and items ordered
· Please add the new date you would like to change the order to.
EG Sarah Bell, order date 02/03. Class 1/2S, 1x toasted cheese, 1 fruit tub, 1xbottled water. New order 07/03.

Benson, Ollie and Lachie were selected to play in a National SAP Soccer Festival in Devonport with South Hobart football club.
They did an amazing job and should be very proud of themselves playing against some very tough competition with teams from NSW, Devonport, Launceston and Hobart. Well done boys!!
PARKING AROUND THE SCHOOL
Please make sure that you obey all Tasmanian Road Laws when parking around the school. Be mindful not to park over driveways, or too close to corners and crossings.
Reminder the turning circle is staff parking only.
