This month our Lindisfarne Learners have not only done an outstanding job striving to achieve their best in their classrooms but have also participated with aspiration and courage in many events that have been held throughout the term. We are so proud of their efforts and would like to reflect on some of these events to remind us just how busy we have all been!
After a successful Athletics Carnival, many of our Grade 3 to 6 students were selected to represent our school at the SPSSA Interschool Athletics Carnival where we came 5th in Division B and recently some students represented our school at the Champions Carnival. Our Kinder to Grade 2 students also had the opportunity to participate in an Athletics Fun Day which was extremely successful with much enjoyment had by all! (See the gallery and details below)
Some of our youngest learners participated in the new Early Years PAT Testing early in the month and our Grades 3 and 5 students have recently had the opportunity to practise for the NAPLAN test which will occur next term, enabling students to understand the process and build confidence before the actual test week arrives. This term parents and guardians also received progress reports which outlined student’s work habits.
We have celebrated Harmony Day this month, had school photos, some classes have ventured on excursions and our Grade 3/4 classes have participated in an outdoor classroom program throughout the term. We have also hosted and some of our primary students participated in the Japanese Roadshow run by the Japan Foundation Sydney, and this week our Kinder to Grade 3 students were visited by Ditto from Bravehearts who shared a message about personal safety.

Harmony Week 2021
This year's Harmony Week was a blast! We had so many students dressing up and participating in the events. The decorated classrooms looked amazing! There have been many lovely photos entered into the Harmony Day photo competition. Well done to all those who entered. Here are our winners collecting their book prizes:
Thank you to the students, teachers and parents who contributed.

Nature Pod
This term we have been working out how to make the Nature Pod a fun place to play. We have been thinking of ways to get safe, fun, and affordable things. We had a look at photos of Nature Pods and decided what's fun safe and affordable.
We then got all the ideas and showed them all to Brett our Groundsman to get his ideas and opinions.
Next we need to see what we can afford and work out exactly what we want and make sure all our ideas are going to work.
Lastly, we need to present our final plan to Ms Innis and Brett.
There has been a lot of work but it will be really fun.

LOST PROPERTY
Please be sure to check the lost property basket outside the office for missing uniform items. Every attempt is made by admin staff to return named items to students. To help us keep up with this, please remind your child to put jackets, hats and drink bottles straight into their bags when not using them. Thank you.
The schedule below shows which classes will be contributing to newsletters throughout the year. We look forward to showing what our classes are working on!
We now have a number of Lunch Time Groups up and running in our school. These programs have been developed to provide students with extra learning opportunities. Currently we have programs operating in the school garden, LEGO clubs and a Games Club. They provide the context for students to;
- participate in learning in an area of special interest
- develop/extend skills in a particular area
- develop social skills, team building and cooperative skills working in a small group environment
- take on a leadership role/teaching others
- building new friendships
Students shared the following insights into their learning:
"At LEGO club we make things with LEGO in groups. We are learning how to build. We help each other and we build things together too. LEGO helps me stay calm at lunch times."
"It’s great being able to do something that I like to do. At gardening club we have been watering seedlings, digging trenches to plant potatoes and learning how to take care of the garden."

Grade 3-6 Athletics Carnival
Students in Grades 3-6 braved the weather to participate in our annual Athletics Carnival on Thursday 25th February. House Captains did a wonderful job of leading their teams in cheering and supporting each other, and encouraging all to have a go.
SPSSA Interschool Athletics Carnival
Students with qualifying times in the Athletics Carnival went along to the SPSSA Interschool Athletics Carnival. Overall, LPS placed 5th and all of our students represented our school beautifully. Congratulations, team!
SPSSA Champions Carnival
On Tuesday the 30th March, 12 of our students donned their school sports uniforms to proudly represent Lindisfarne Primary at the SPSSA Champions Athletic Carnival.
Special mention to Baxter for making it through to the final of the 200m. Finlay also made it through to the final of the 200m and placed 4th in the final. Sophie placed 1st in the 800m final, Scarlet placed 4th in the 400m final and our Grade 4 boys came away with 3rd place in their shuttle relay. All team members gave their best and should be commended for their efforts. Congratulations everyone.
Mrs Bloomfield
3/4 Class Teacher
At Lindisfarne Primary School our commitment to every learner is to provide quality teaching and learning that will enable students to demonstrate a year of growth for a year of learning in number. The Big 6 in number are six essential ideas which provide students with key understandings that will support them in the future. They work in a sequential order starting at Trusting the Count, Place Value, Multiplicative Thinking, Partitioning, Proportional Reasoning & then Generalising.
Our staff provide many opportunities for students to be emersed in learning about number. One of these includes rotations! Maths rotations provides all students with the learning experience that allow them to engage in number activities independently, increasing their fluency and allowing them to explore ideas together in a small group. It also enables each student to be a part of a teacher focus group each week. Having a teacher focus group allows the teacher to provide targeted learning that is differentiated to the needs of the students within the group. Here are some photos of the amazing rotation work our Kinder to Grade 2 students have been involved in this term! Next term our Grade 3 to 6 rotations will feature in the newsletter.
Kinder
In Kinder playing games plays a crucial part in Maths Rotations. These games were focusing on counting and numeral recognition.
Prep
In Prep our students focus on subitising (recognising how many without having to count all) and using ten frames to represent amounts. Creating visual images of numbers (knowing that 6 is 4 & 2, 3 & 3, 5 & 1 etc) is crucial to developing good number sense.
Grade 1/2
In Grades 1 & 2 students work independently on devices to practise building fluency. They also practise building fluency through games and other activities that focus on Trusting the Count and Place Value.

SPOTLIGHT ON LEARNING - 5/6 NAVY & PREP BLUE
5/6 NAVY
This term, 5/6 Navy have been focussing on questioning. During our reading rotations students have been exploring three types of questions:
- Online questions, which can be thought of as retrieving information that is clearly stated in a text.
- Between the line questions which can be thought as interpreting explicit information in the text and making connections between paragraphs within the text.
- Beyond the line questions which can be thought of as evaluative questions, which is interpreting and making inferences based on the knowledge the reader brings to the text from their personal experience (text to self), connections to other books they have read ( text to text) and connections to their world knowledge (text to world).
Students participated in some directed sessions where the teacher posed the different types of questions.
Then students experiment with posing these types questions to the group.
The reading group then tried to answer these questions, we discussed how successfully the student generated questions fitted into the 3 categories.
The aim of these sessions is to help students understand the different types of questions and to apply appropriate thinking to successfully answer the differing questions types.
This supports student ability to comprehend a variety of texts.
Michelle Isaac
Class Teacher, 5/6 Navy
PREP BLUE
Term 1 in Prep has been about beginning to read!
We have been practising our blending and segmenting of sounds with compound words.
One of our favourite activities is ‘Switch it’, where we write a CVC word on our whiteboards and Miss Hill tells us to “switch it” to a new word. We need to listen for a different sound and switch one of our letters to another to make the new word.
Our focus in reading rotations has been on assessment this term, along with our letter sounds and book orientation. Our reading strategy focus has been Eagle Eye; using the pictures to give us a clue as to what an unknown word might be.
We can already read our spelling words from SMART Spelling and are already getting so much better at reading the sentence that goes with each word. Some children have even been spotting Oxford ‘star’ words in our SMART Spelling sentences!
Our class is very well represented at Reader’s Club on Tuesday mornings and it has been fantastic to see so many children doing their home reading so often; thank you families. The children have been very proud to receive their home reading certificates and it is amazing to see so many achieve in excess of 25 nights already!

Have a fabulous holiday break.
Representatives from the Japan Foundation Sydney have been touring Tasmania with a Japanese Cultural Road Show. All Grade 5 and 6 participated in activities typical of a Japanese Sports Days. Whilst individual running races are held at Sports Days in Japan, most events focus on team work and participation. Students enjoyed tama-ire (how many balls can be thrown into a hoop in 1 minute), dekapan (huge pants race) and oodama korogashi (big ball roll relay).
All Grade 4 students participated in the second workshop to learn a Japanese festival dance. Yosakoi dance competition is held in Kochi Prefecture and has over 19,000 participants each Summer. Students held Naruko clappers and followed Yumi Sensei (Japanese Language Assistant to Tasmania) to learn the dance moves.

LOTE - Japanese Teacher
With the beautiful autumnal 'summer’ weather of recent weeks, students have been going full-swing in the garden. We now have seed potatoes, green manure crops, spinach, silverbeet, kale, snowpeas and broad beans beginning to sprout. The potting shed is full of seedlings from seed donations (thank you everyone) as well as rosemary and hydrangea cuttings. There is a small bed of donated ground-covering succulents which has been planted near the kitchen. The worms are growing before our eyes in their bathtub worm farm and the liquid fertiliser is being used on the garden and seedlings. Donated seed has been extracted and packaged as we prepare for our first fundraiser.
GUEST CHEF
Last week was extra special with students in 4 classes experiencing their first LPS Kitchen-Garden cooking lesson with Guest Chef and parent, Scott Heffernan. Students worked alfresco-style using the BBQ to cook Potato Rosti, Pumpkin Moustaches, Savoury Pancakes, Sweet Pancakes, and Scone Rounds with lashings of freshly made raspberry jam and cream. Our thanks and gratitude to Scott for sharing his expertise and knowledge, supplying all of the ingredients, and bringing in cooking resources from his mobile catering business, Flint Kitchen.
